Why does my truck seem to suffer so much when towing

89 Dodge W250 CTD,727 AUTO,3.54 gears.HX35 turbo-12 cm2 exhaust housing,pump turned up 1 complete turn,BHAF,piston Lift pump.

My truck runs great and it has lots of power when unloaded.Once you put a load on it,even if its a small car with a tow bar the truck really seems to notice it.Especially from a stop.Once the truck is rolling does pretty good but it just seems like getting a load no matter how small going seems to problematic.granted the truck still tows fine but towing at low speeds it just seems like the truck is really working hard.Even with manually shifting the automatic.

How can I fix that and still keep somewhat respectable MPG.Right now I get about 17.5 MPG unloaded and 14-15 loaded.

Get a good converter. They feel usless when the conv. eats all the power.

Yup, stock converter= junk. That's the short version of the mathmatical equasion of "Why don't my truck don't tow good?"

I got a question. What kinda gas temp are you runnin pullin a load with that 35. Just wondering.

My "new" '91.5 1 ton with an automatic seems to yank a 6,500 pound load around really well.
Even better since I put this other VE on and punched the fuel screw in a few turns.

It kinda sorta' pulls, then you nail it and smoke rolls, as the smoke starts to clear up, you feel this "push" as the infinitely slow turbo lights, and the speedometer darts towards 60mph before you know it....Trailer, load and all.
I'm thinking it has a decent convertor in it.

I'm happier N' a pig in shti, right now.

I need guages.

Hopefully not too high,but I don't have a EGT gauge.Can't afford one.I know its alot cheaper than a new engine but...
