3" rear brakes

Postby ellis93 » Thu Oct 21, 2010 4:59 am

Is it worth converting over to them on my 250. I've got it down for a leakin axle seal and seen the shoes are thin. If it is worth it does anybody have the part numbers.

Got the part numbers already. All I need now is to know if its worth doing.
Oreilly part numbers
Shoes-314pg = 22.79$
Wheel cyl-wc36057 & wc36058 = 10.64$ each.

I have 3" shoes and used the original W250 wheel cylinders & it better balanced the front to rear out balance our trucks have. My ABS is unplugged. Turn your drums to clean up the rust and throw them on. I'm at 40K miles using this setup.

Well I got it done. All one ton stuff, turned the drums, and got rid of the abs.
All in all it is a great improvement over what I had. Got maybe 20 miles on the brakes and they feel good with the pedel right up top.

The larger rear wheel cylinders let the rear brakes come on at a slower rate due to the new larger volume of fluid required. To me the greater pedal travel puts more of a load on the front brakes by applying them more before the rear brakes take effect. I swapped all the pads, drums, rotors, & shoes 40,000 miles ago and they are still in great shape. Hope you have the same luck and not end up with front rotor warping issues that seemed prevalent back in 2004 on DTR & TDR. That was my reason for retaining the smaller wheel cylinders back then.

How it feels now is way better than it ever has. Before there was a lot nose dive at moderate pedel pressure. Now there is hardly any. The warping of the front rotors is what I have been dealing with on this truck since I've owned it. I really think that could be blamed upon that abs BS that never has worked. If I still have that problem I will more than likly find a diff pressure rate proportion valve or an adjustable one. What's your thoughts on that mr bob

If you continue to have front rotor warpage I think that I would look at using the matching Chevy proportioning valve along with the Chevy rear wheel cylinders.

What year would I need to rob them from. I have some new chevy brake parts at my shop and a few old 3/4 tons to use for parts.

I don't remember what the exact years were. You could look up the part number you used for the rear wheel cylinders at your local auto parts store and go from there.

Thanks for ur knowledge on this. Went to mobile alabama this morning in it and I guess that the brakes wore in and now I can stop on a dime. ALMOST as good as a hydro-boost. Very little pedel pressure to make it stop. I am well pleased.

I just took off my abs piece of crap last night, not on purpose but i was installing some overloads and hade to move it and while moving it around i guess the very rusty line broke so i spliced it together with compresion fittings and my brakes are ten times better.

Never use compression fittings on brakes! There is enough pressure in the lines to blow the line out of the ferrule. Redo it with flare fittings before you kill your kids or somebody elses.

Aaaaah everybody run
If it was to pop loose the proportion valve would stop the fluid flow to the rear. I would have to agree with mr toombs.

I wont even get into this one, not all compression fittings are weak. For the most part i agree, if using hardware type compression fittings.

There are industrial compression fittings that can handle the pressures no problem.

Regardless, compression fittings of any type on brakes are illegal for street driven vehicles.

X2, yup, you sure want to redo that. I have had tons of brake lines pop due to rust and it sure wakes you up.
