best D80 dually axle?

Depending on what I'm doing for work then I was thinking about taking a road trip out myself... if so the 3.07s would stay in till then... That's if I don't get impatient ( my 3.07 keeps baking gearoil, hauling on the highway with them gets hotttt)

These questions are so unlike me, but why are they getting hot?
Is it due to the load (or overloading), or is it due to the fact that it takes so much to move them with extra weight and it generates more heat?
Is it the gearset itself that causes the issue?

I want to know if I'm pissing up the proverbial rope if I were to put a 6 speed with a 3.07 axle in the carhauler and pull a GCVW of 26,000 pounds.

Breaking a 3.07 axle 2,000 miles from home is not an option I care for.

im gona guess its the fact that there are less total teath sharing the same load....I guess?

there is probably a hp/tourque/rpm relationship that factors in hence why pullers try to keep their trucks out of their peak tq range?

im thinking a mag/hytec pan would solve the issue, im going about 8000 miles before brand new napa premium begins to turn black, I cant imagine thats good for bearings

the trans and transfercase have stayed nice and golden but the rear seems to take the abuse. ive eaten 2 pinion seals in a year and slop from the rear is noticable

If it's sloppy then the excessive play is shearing the oil and wrecking it. Try to reshim to tighten it up.
When you say hauling, are you pulling something or hauling azz? If you pull or have a lot in the bed I'd say get smaller tires to change the gearing when you have the load. Less strain that way.

Both hauling ass and a big heavy JD tractor, been towing alot lately maybe 2 trips a week with it about 100 miles, then regular dd duties during the rest of the week, not really looking to reshim the 3.07 just cause I want to swap em out.

I agree since it's got sloppy it's started to ruin oil more routinely, had some muddy water in there for a drive home one night, drained and replaced oil the next day gears looked good but I think the bearings got washed that was about 2 months ago and it ate a wheel and pinion seal right after that

Should it have the rear swaybar? ... I hope it does seller did not remember it was out of a 97 3500 diesel

MOST SRW trucks would have a swaybar, especially a 5 speed D-80 one.
Dodge was aware that some folks would tow with the SRW trucks and they were smart enough to stiffen the rear up with the bar, to kinda' counter the "greasy" sway feeling that a SRW with a goosneck can get.
That this is a 3500 SRW means it at least HAD one.

If you find you need one, I JUST got back from a yard that still has a bar laying in the bed of a junker and the end brackets are still on the truck.

Welp.... Got that axle, turns out it is a dualie, out of a 99 3500 came with the sway bar, does that mean it's got 37 spline axles? Limited slip is there, any one know if it's power lock or track lock?

Checked the I-I distance between spring perches once I found out it was a drw, both measured just over 43 inches, should fit fine right?

It will fit just fine.
Did you get the lower spring plates, too?

There are no 37 spline axles on the Dodge D-80s, as far as I know.
Seems to me that's a Ford or Chevy cab and chassis deal.

Yyup mark, got the axles with the springs still attached, going to use them in the truck for sure

How many sets do you want?

I've YET to measure the overall length and center pin distance on those springs, let us know the outcome on that.
I'm just too lazy to lay a tape on them.

ok so i need some opinions....

the new springs from the d80 are about 8 inches longer total (didnt measure any of this accuratly)

my springs now are a 1 ton pack with 3 extra springs from another 1 ton stack, the front hanger bolt to center pin distance is about 24 inches, the new springs measure about 28 inches

from the rear eye to the center pin on the 1stgen springs is about 28 inches, the new springs measure about 32.5 inches

what should I dooo?????

the springs that are on the truck now are shot, ive got aluminum stock acting as bushings on the spring eyes and the shackle to rear hanger bushing is junk (also the main (top) leaf is almost worn through on both sides)....moral of the story, they need to be replaced

i was thinking about buying the spring hangers from jungle jim on RCC but they mount to the stock frame locations, meaning I would have to move the rear back 3.5 inches and front forward 4 inches...IF i was to use the new springs

the jungle jim hangers are also designed for 2.5 inch wide springs so i would have to modify them for the new springs OR grind the new springs down to fit the hangers.

i dont really want to replace the hangers with stock pieces but they DEFINITLY need replacing.

other option is to buy stock/junglejim hangers and have a brand new set of springs made (stock style that would work with stock hanger locations)...... then just bolt the D80 under the truck with spacers to take up the space of the 3inch wide spring perches on the axle... this may be the easiest but then I loose the possibility of actually having a nice ride with the 2nd gen springs....buying new springs will also be more costly....if you cant tell my mind is ripped in a 100 directions about this

open to any opinions on the easiest way to do this....I'd like to get all the parts out infront of me and blast it out on a weekend, not really looking forward to drilling new holes in the frame and dealing with too much customization (I just dont have the time to have the truck down for a week or so)

Damn, I guess this means 2nd gen springs are out.
I'd suggest looking into other manufacturers, Ford, Chevy, etc. with the same spring width as the 80.
There may be one that's a similar length overall and has the same offset for the center pin dimension.
