better driveshaft's

Postby ahale2772 » Sat Aug 13, 2011 7:18 pm

so ive got the puny early firstgen front driveshaft with the toyota prius sized ujoints...then the rear looks like a toothpick compared to a second gen...essentially they are really the only pieces im worried about breaking when beating on the truck, ive allready shattered one front joint and that was NOT a fun experience

whats the best way to make a better front driveshaft. Im not opposed to cutting the tranny/transfercase crossmember (then re-strengthing it) to get a better angle for the driveshaft.

I'd like to eliminate the c/v joint and just do two u-joints and a slip joint

then on the rear... when will one break? the slip joint does not look very beefy and ive seen the plastic style ones get pretty sloppy. I know I could re-tube it but... where should I focus on strengthening?

are there anyplaces that one can buy parts such as slipjoints, different yokes, ect ect...

Alex check with these people: http://www.clutchandpowertrain.com/
I've dealt with them for years and have built a lot of 4x4 shafts for customers of mine.
Call them a talk to them, they might be able to hook you up.

The 93's had the heavier front yoke with a little bigger joint. As far as the cv, they are pretty stout. The rear, well, they are undersized too. You can ring the slip splines. ( twist )

Im going to throw a different axle upfront soon, and its from a 92 so I guess it will have that Bigger yoke.

that site looks good Ellis, I may call, Essentially I'd like to build one myself and just see if I could get parts

I think it was a 93 only thing. I have not looked at my 92, but I think its the small one. I'm not going to look at it either until it comes out to say " HI ".

I have heard this reference to '93 having the bigger (7290 instead of 7260) front u-joint, but in my experience they are extremely rare to find.
I've seen a lot of '93 trucks and I only recall finding 2 with the larger yoke.
I suspect it was either an option, or an over the counter available upgrade.

If you step up to '94, then they are pretty easy to come by and the yoke will fit the early trucks.

As far as eliminating the CV joint, my view on that is that if it were practical to eliminate it, then truck manufacturers would do so, as it is cheaper to build a driveshaft without that set-up.

If you're going to go bigger and custom on the front driveshaft, might as well put the 1410 yoke on it and be done with it.
It won't cost any more to do that than going the 7290 route.

My 93 has the bigger joint and yoke. Its the stocker. My truck has never had a joint replaced. I know when I popped the yoke on my other 89 all that was available was the bigger one listed for the 93. I had to get a conversion joint to fit my driveshaft to the yoke.
