Sugestions please

Postby rrfarm » Wed Oct 05, 2011 11:13 am

Just finished stretching my club cab frame to accept the new crew cab. Fixing to take and have the frame sandblasted and was wondering what would be the best paint to put on it when it comes back. POR-15, chassi saver, epoxy primer, suggestions? Would like to hear what others who have done this did and their results and the amount of time it has been since it was done and what it looks like now. Would like something that will look good, spray good, and be durable because this will be a working truck.

Thanks,

Chasis saver is all I use anymore. I've drilled threw it and it doesn't split or peal like Por15 and has lasted several years of abuse on a salt truck that doesn't get taken care of. I don't have any pics now might be some on my computer if I can get it to work.

I would not use POR15. I've tried it on a bunch of different things and now they all look like crap. We painted the back of one of our flat beds and had to repaint it a year later. The frame on a jeep we did was sand blasted and then painted with it using the metal ready and marine wash they recommend, four months later it was pealing off in strips.

also, epoxy primer can act like powder coatiing after a while, rust will blead underneath.

I like POR but it only works in very limited conditions

What are the limited conditions some people say it doesn't work good on sandblasted metal others say it works best on sandblasted metal. What did you use it on? I've heard some say it would crack like powder coat too.

ive never seen it crack...yet.

sometimes it likes cold, sometimes it likes heat.

sometimes it wont cure with moisture, sometimes it cures better with moisture.

ive only got lucky a few times with it, probably 50-50 chance of it coming out right (lots of times the finish cures with a matte hue and it becomes porus)

also, it really likes rust, bare sandblasted metal is less apealing to it than metal with some "tooth". they actually recommend that you leake the metal out to rust up a bit then paint it. (but you must clean off all scaling rust)

when it does come out correct you have a hard time grinding it off...expecially your hands

as much as it sounds cheesy, rustoleum has a baremetal primer (white) that sticks like crazy to clean metal. I just painted my z28 and used that as a primer and it WILL NOT chip.

anyways, good luck

for example, I painted the entire floor of my z28 about 5 years back with POR, I had it down to bare metal and let it sit all winter, it had a pretty heavy coat of surface rust and I POR'd right over it.

the floor has been bullet proff ever since.

except for one spot that I patched with shiny stainless and that rubbed right off

Thanks. That's what most people recommend is to let it at least flash before using the POR but I have a hard time with that after going to the trouble of having it stripped of all the rust. I've used rustoleum and had good results with rust it just wasn't that stout with abuse but haven't heard of what you mentioned might have to check into it

I've never had a nice clean rustfree surface to work from. The chasis saver I just took a grinder with a wire wheel and knock the heavy rust off and then shoot it. It neutralizes the rust.

POR-15 ruined my truck the previous owner painted everything i mean everything and it has been one rust issue after the next for me! Nightmare.

I would recommend either having the frame powdercoated, or if you want to spray it yourself, I can say that from experirnce that RM EP-569 is awesome against weather but it has to be clean and prepped metal. Also you have to really agitate the can to get the sludge of the bottom stirred in before you pour.

Never heard of it but ill check into it. What did you do besides blasting for metal prep?

Its an epoxy primer I used it when painting my firebird. I just took the old paint down with 80 on the DA and did all the bodywork then blocked it to 180 and sprayed the EP. at a later date I wetsanded it and sprayed the base and clear. But you don't need to topcoat it it won't absorb water like regular primer surfacer.

I'm in a different boat but same topic. My frame is pretty rusty and I want what's left to last. I have a few areas where I could chisel off rust scale and I know I have to replace a spring hanger.

My original plan was to chip off all the scaling rust and por15 the whole frame. After reading this, I don't know if that's the best approach. I don't really want to do a cab/bed off treatment.

Sorry, no useful info here for the o.p.

Anybody ever looked into LBS rustseal I found it today and it looks really good. Said it would work over rusty metal but staid it worked great over sandblasted metal without all the chemicals and its about the same price as the chassis saver so its a little cheaper than POR-15. Wanted to see what everybody else thought but it looks appealing to me.
