what axle in what

Postby 1STGENFARMBOY » Sat Oct 08, 2011 11:19 am

I know this ain't 1st gen questions but could be helpfull in locating a rear exle for a swap-out.

can someone clearify what gen did they use the same exle in both 2500-3500.

i am hearing that some 2nd gen 2500 with a manual trans had a D80 true/false.

somewhere in the 3rd gen they started useing the same rearend. true/false

it would just be helpfull info when searching junk yards.

Thanks Dar

All second gen 2500 manual trucks have Dana 80 rears. All automatic 2500 had Dana 70's. The third gens all share the AAM Rear axle.

According to dodge if it was a factory 2500 Auto truck it had the D70. Only way you could get the D80 was with a 5 speed or 3500 factory. That's just what I turned up in my searching and talking to a buddy of ours that was a Dodge master tech from 92-03.

His is an 01 sport model that I had to put the clutch disc in. It is very much an 80. I can't tell you if it was a special order or not. I can only say that it was bought with 42,000 miles on it and he's had it for 9 years with no mods from us back there.
I can tell you that there were numbers on the housing that I used to get the clutch disc, counter man at Clutch and power train in mobile alabama used them for ordering of parts.

Hmm got me. It would be the only one I've ever heard of with a 80 factory in a auto truck. It could have had the rear replaced factory for some reason and that's just what was sent to the dealer and installed. I've scraped allot of dodges now 1st and 2nd gens and only 2 of them had 80's and that was my 01 dually and a 96 5 speed. 37 auto, 2500 series Cummins trucks I've scrapped have all been 70's.

I got my 80 out of a 3500 C&C truck, about as wide as a stock srw d70 but has dually brakes that are pushed way back

I know a farmer with a sport model 2500 neer me, its an auto truck and I believe it has a d80 disk axle with the rear swaybar (hes got one of them MASSIVE mag/hytech covers on it). he worked a dodge dealership for 20+ years, might have ordered it special?

^^^ yep, sounds like the Paw-in-laws. Disc brake, swaybar, and one tiny little overload spring on top of a 4 leaf spring pack.

The newer trucks (In fact, even the 1st gens) come with a sticker under the hood, up to '97, in '98 it was moved to the glovebox.
This is a build sticker that calls out optional or major build components, usually axles and their GVWs.
It's not unheard of to see a post-'98 auto 3/4 ton with a D-80.

Mark.
