BC... much better deal than 699???.......................thats what i paid for my cast 188...................

I wasnt talking about the tappet face, I was talking about the difference in pushrod end's, the 12v pushrod does not mate perfectly with the 24v tappet

Ran out and bought some fresh dowel rods today, we're gonna try and do the cam swap this weekend. Keep my sanity in your thoughts.

Anyways, we welded up my wastegate dump. Used a stick and my cousin refuses to find a chipping hammer so it's completely full of holes. I'll mig them over this weekend and grind it down pretty.

Whatever, at least it lines up and seals. I started playing with my intake piping too, but had to pull the head back off to clean the surface and get ready for the cam swap. This whole 90*-fest looks doable. 8)

Looks good :) my prayers are with you on the cam swap... take your time...locktight stuff...

make sure your lifter puller-upper works when soaked in oil.

also... SUPER important is to make sure the lifter puller upper will actually fit, when the lifter needs to rotate, and make the 90* turn to get into the bore.

mine did not... so every time I was pulling a lifter up, I had to pull the troff out, let the lifter hang, straighten out, then pull it up.

also helps to use a thin material as your lifter troff.... like BC had said, so that the lifter has more room to make the turn.

and also... make sure the engine is level... otherwise its a PITA to drop the lifter puller through the lifter bore.

good luck!

Dropped new #6 lifter in the pan. Guess I needed an oil pan gasket anyways.

Anger ensues...

So, . . . . . I'm fixing to swap my cam. What happened in your case, so it doesn't happen in my case? :?:

We made the trough and it as a bit tight at the back. It stood up crooked and a buddy was rocking the trough to get it staright and it rocked a bit too far. At the same time I must have been pulling the wire a bit too tight.

We cut up an old semi mudflap and used tie-wire to pull it up. Had a giant ball of wire on the other side, and we had to push the rubber in with needle nose pliers to seat it. It was just a bad luck...

No, bringing through the front cam hole like your writeup. Stainless tie wire, it wasn't too bad. We just got a little excited getting it liked up apparently.

UUUUGGGHHHHHHH

Lame, thats a big ole' pain in the arse.

I had a spare motor laying around that I tested my lifter troff on... first one I tried, I dropped... so dont feel bad.

new oil pan gasket will be good 8) and hopefully you can just reach up there and put each one in by hand

BC, like you said in your writeup, the thickness of the troff was the biggest issue, I switched from 1/4 pvc to some veryyyy thin stuff, and the lifters still would not take the 90* turn into the bore

We had some exhaust pipe we cut up. It almost made it, but got stuck in the bore sideways somehow. We were wiggling the trough side to side and got a little excited.

I actually, on the advice of an HVAC buddy of mine, went to our local hardware store and grabbed some heater ducting. It looks to just barely be long enough to cover all the journals, but it's super thin, easily bendable, and able to be cut with tin snips. I'll snip it to size and clean the edges with the grinder/sandpaper.

I had a rough day at work today but went out to start dropping the pan anyways. Got all but the center bolts out before I noticed how good the beer was tasting. Got to counting and saw 6 cans sitting beside me after only an hour and a half. I'll finish up tomorrow, otherwise I may end up not making it to work.

whats your plan for jacking the pan? Id like to know how you do it, in tuck style.

expecially if you can get it off with out undoing the pickup... IMO it would not be fun to try and reinstall the pan and pickup, with new gaskets on both....at the same time

I don't know if I'll actuall be able to drop the pan or not. With no head or accessory drive there's miles of room to lift the engine up, but I don't know how far the transmission mount will loosen up to let me. Worst case scenario I'll just fish the lifter out and snake a new gasket in under the pickup.

I'm going to use lifting eyes and a couple of old headbolts to pick the engine up. I don't trust the poor aluminum bellhousing to support all that weight hanging out there.

yeah, the trans will be your biggest obstacle.

I hate doing oil pan gaskets when you can only drop the pan a bit

Silly fact... your only a few bolts away from just pulling the block..................................................
