I refuse to pull it out.

The engine has never been out of that truck and if I have my way it never will be.

Strike one!

Here's the offending lifter with a comparison of a 12v and 24v lifter.

This should explain why your cam trough has to be as thin as possible. They're a lot wider.

Do you need the 24v lifter? I don't remember anyone saying why they went to them when they swapped the cam.

Yup, a wider contact area lessens the surface PSI that the oil has to withstand. Apparently the CR lifters are even wider, but I've never seen one.

Hamiltons cam lobes are wwwiiiiiddddeee. He recommends the 24v lifter because of this. And as said before, wider lobes + wider lifters = less lbs per square inch for durability and longevity.

Now that Alex said it I do remember reading it. This damn old guy siht is getting old! :x Wider is better with the 60lb or heavier valve springs for sure.

Got the lifters and cam in finally. #6 was completely uncalled for, the rest went in much easier by comparison. It seems like the lifter bore doesn't match up with the hole in the block very well on #'s 5 and 6 and it really made those two tough.

You can do that through Alex, he already has one installed and running. ;)

I threw the old gasket on and torqued the old bolts down to 150 ft/lbs. The engine went around with no apparent contact or funny noises. I'll pull it all off again and put the studs and new gasket under it tomorrow, then start piecing everything back together again.

It's nowhere near running yet. My old gasket was steel with fiber sections made into it where oil or water passed through. I just popped out the fiber sections, cleaned the crap off it, and threw it in there to make sure I wouldn't have any contact problems.

BTW found out I can make 20psi of boost reving the truck with no load. couldnt even bump the needle before the cam

smart throwing the head on to see if everything was Kosher. BTW i'm running .010/.015 for lash now, it makes a noticible difference in how the truck runs, hard to believe.

make sure you check the lash once a day for a few days after you put it all together, I did the cam, checked lash, then blew the headgasket, replaced it, did the lash, retourqued the stock bolts.... did the lash. then threw the studs in, tourqued them once, checked lash, retourqued, checked lash, then thought I was good... I wasnt... headgasket sucked down another .005 even after the second tourque... so I check the lash often now.... :@:

a burnt valve takes the fun out of a new cam :?

I took a break from the serious stuff and threw it together enough to get an idea on my intake piping. While the radiator was in there I decided to fab up my fan mount.

Image

That's one of the big fans on the left, and a smaller one that mounts and rotates in a mirror of that one. I've got them both bolted down now, but came in before I took a pic of it. I'm going to weld some 1/2" ID pipe to that bottom angle for those feet to sit in, then have them held with the one bolt at the top.

Dunno how I'm going to control them yet, thinking just have the baby kick on full speed once it hits 190* and have them both on full blast on a switch in the cab. Time and patience will tell if I get ay more in depth than that.

Alex, my new head will be o-ringed so I'll be spending plenty of time under the valve covers anyways. Thanks for the heads up on the lash. 8) Any more stories from your cam? The people want to know how it's treating you!!!

Not many stories about it, it makes the truck sound pretty cool, has a different tone to it now, low and growley instead of barking like it used to.

egts are way down from before, probably 200 degrees, boost is somewhere between 6 and 12 psi cruising at 65-70 at 80 boost is just under 20psi.

seems like it really likes timing, my pump is literally touching the head, and I'm planning on skipping a tooth sooner than later.

Im in the hunt for a secondgen BAD, something I can drive daily, and then the 89 is going to get retired, to full hot rod status  500hp out of the VE is the goal this year, new fuel system, 14mm, want to try a big single, possibly a s366 if not a small s400, some big sticks.

goal is to make the clutch slip by the end of the year
