I have a 92 I/c motor I swapped into an 88 Chevy crew cab. I am getting ready to drive it 13 hours from Florida to Virginia for college and I'm looking to add a fuel pressure gauge to monitor the output of the lift pump. I have turned up the fuel pump. Rotated pin 90* 2 turns of star wheel and 1.5 turns of fuel screw.



So my question is what psi should the first gen diaphragm lift pump maintain?

The stock pump? I'd bet you'd be lucky to see more than 5psi out of one of those things. The more the better though, those things aren't physically capable of making enough pressure to hut anything.

I was curious because I have heard all of these horror stories of the 24v vp44 and how they need to be properly fed. I am still fairly new to the ve

Oh, you want pressure, preferably in between 10-15psi, but I wouldn't expect to see it out of that LP. Any pressure is better than none.

If you're running anything more than 0 psi............the pump will be ok with a stock or mild tune.

In fact, at a factory set up................0 psi won't cause issues.

Our injection pump's internal vane pump does a very good job (on a stock or nearly stock truck).

It's when you start turning up the power..........at all, that you'll want to start really watching that fuel pressure.




Now, all that aside...........the service manual says to maintain a minimum of 3 psi of fuel pressure.

Man no worries with the ve like the VP pumps,you could see 0 psi several times before anything happened.....with the VP about twice an it's fried.
Our pumps can suck its own fuel and live for quite a while.....tho its not recommended.

Alright perfect because I found an auto meter pro comp liquid filled fuel pressure gauge that is from 0-15 psi 8)

VW tdi ve pumps don't even have lift pumps at all...so I guess a ve is capable of sucking fuel on its own.
1930 Model A, 91 non i/c, he351ve over ht3b, bagged all around, mostly built 47rh, 72 lpm sticks, 600hp/1400 ft lbs (cummins math), just needs traction

If you plan on running 15psi, you should have a 30psi gauge. I read that you should try to choose a gauge about double what you plan on reading for longevity and accuracy.

Optimal pressure for a stock LP is generally between 3-6 psi with a clean fuel filter.
'92 Dodge w350, 5 spd, Dana 80 3.54, timing spacer, ground stock pin&3200 spring, vgt, hungry diesel piston pump, water/meth, Honed stock injectors, 4" turbo back, light IP adjustments

This is a great idea. Gauges tend to be the most acccurate in the mid-area of it's range of operation.
