axle ratio

Postby spencermumma » Mon Mar 12, 2012 11:29 am

I am looking to.run.3.55 or 4.10 gearing wondering if I were able to take a gasser rearend and make it work in a Cummins? Is it even Dana 60/70 ? Don't want.the 3.07 axle ratio or is there any way to.just change gearing? I know its Ben talked about before but I'm confused on if you can chnge the geari.g or not?
Thanks spencer

I'm not an expert by any means, but my understanding is this: If you have 3.07s, you can get lower (higher numerically) gears, but if you have lower (ex. 4.10s) gears you cannot go to 3.07s. This is because the 3.07s are physically bigger and technically the 3.07 axles are D61/71. All of this assumes you are keeping the axles and just changing the ping and pinion. As far as using a different axle, I believe the gassers have the same rearend and a D70 is a D70, gas or diesel. I also don't think the gassers typically had the D60 front end, so that may be an issue.

I'm sure someone with more know how will chime in

Dana 70's and Dana 80's are what you want, not a 60. Judging by your sig, you like to play. A 60 would not be ideal.

Trade your 3.07's for someone who has 3.55's or 4.10's.

Also understand, max speed will be about 60mpg @ 2300 rpms without OD.

Could you just swap 4.10 ring and pinion to an axle that has 3.07?

No

The 3:07 is called a Dana 71. It has the pinion offset about 1/2" to the passenger side of the axle. Here is a pic of a 3:07 pinion beside a 3:54 pinion.

No, that's the medium weight pinion. The lite weight one has no teeth on it.

I thought the axles with the 3.07 gears couldn't change gear sets. Complete axle swap only?

3.55 to 4.10 or the other way around, you have to change the carrier as well. Not just swap gear sets.

The carrier is the same for 4:10 and down gearing. It doesn't matter if its a Dana 70 or 71. Any gears above a 4:10 ratio require a different carrier.

The AAM is the axle that has a couple of different carriers used below 4:10 ratio's.
